OLFA® Legacy: Sharpness & Innovation Since 1956

Our OLFA® Story: A Tradition of Sharpness and Innovation

While many associate OLFA® with our revolutionary rotary cutters (introduced in 1979), our legacy of cutting excellence began much earlier, in 1956.

The Birth of the Snap-Off Blade Cutter

It all started with Mr. Yoshio Okada, the founder of OLFA CORPORATION. Inspired by the clean snap of a chocolate bar and the sharp edge of broken glass, Mr. Okada invented the world's first Snap-Off Blade Cutter. This ingenious design revolutionized cutting, offering a fresh, safe, and convenient alternative to traditional blades. The iconic OLFA® Cutter, as it's often called, has become a global bestseller, synonymous with sharpness and quality.

From Innovation to Industry Leader

Our commitment to improving the cutting experience goes beyond the snap-off blade. In 1979, we introduced the world's first rotary cutter, forever changing how crafters like quilters cut fabric. Today, OLFA® offers a wide range of cutting tools for diverse applications:

  • Professional Tools: From construction sites and packaging operations to demanding office tasks, our professional-grade tools ensure clean, efficient cuts.

  • Art & Hobby: Unleash your creativity with our cutters designed for papercrafts, quilting, modeling, and more.

Unwavering Quality: The OLFA® Difference

OLFA® blades are crafted with the utmost care. We use high-quality materials, forge them using traditional sword-making techniques, and sharpen them for unparalleled longevity. This dedication to quality extends to the holders and handles, all designed and manufactured in Japan with rigorous quality checks.

Safety is paramount at OLFA®. That's why our signature yellow color wasn't chosen by accident. In 1967, Mr. Okada himself selected this soft yellow hue, reminiscent of an egg yolk, to evoke feelings of safety and familiarity.

The Name and the Logo: A Story in Themselves

The name "OLFA" itself is derived from two Japanese words meaning "to break a blade," a clever nod to our signature innovation. Our instantly recognizable parallelogram logo? It's simply the shape of a snap-off blade, a constant reminder of the ingenuity that started it all.
